In 2025, Spain’s embassy and consulates in Canada (Toronto, Montreal and Ottawa) received 2,074 applications for short-stay Schengen visas and issued 1,872. 5.1% of applications were refused. In 2024 it had been 1.4%: the rate rose by 3.7 points. Applications rose by 20% compared with 2024 (1,727).
For comparison, all Schengen states together refused 9.0% of the applications lodged in Canada that year, from 1.6% at the consulates of Greece to 23.7% at those of Portugal. Spain’s consulates worldwide refused 14.6%. Spain was the 7th most applied-for Schengen state in Canada.
You apply to the Schengen state that is your main destination (the longest stay or the main purpose; the state of first entry only when there is none), so a lower rate elsewhere is no reason to apply there.
