Spain: visa decisions in Brazil
| Year | Applications | Visas issued | Refused | Refusal rate | Multiple-entry share |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2023 | 342 | 286 | 34 | 10.6% | 17.5% |
| 2024 | 381 | 337 | 23 | 6.4% | 22.8% |
| 2025 | 408 | 335 | 52 | 13.4% | 17.3% |
In 2025, Spain’s embassy and consulates in Brazil (São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Brasília, Porto Alegre and Salvador De Bahia) received 408 applications for short-stay Schengen visas and issued 335. 13.4% of applications were refused. In 2024 it had been 6.4%: the rate rose by 7.0 points, a sharp increase. Applications rose by 7% compared with 2024 (381).
For comparison, all Schengen states together refused 23.6% of the applications lodged in Brazil that year, from 16.4% at the consulates of France to 57.0% at those of Portugal. Spain’s consulates worldwide refused 14.6%. Spain was the 3rd most applied-for Schengen state in Brazil.
You apply to the Schengen state that is your main destination (the longest stay or the main purpose; the state of first entry only when there is none), so a lower rate elsewhere is no reason to apply there. The figures cover applications lodged in Brazil, by any nationality: mostly citizens, but also residents from other countries.
