Finland: visa decisions in Australia

YearApplicationsVisas issuedRefusedRefusal rateMultiple-entry share
2023 20519173.5% 20.4%
2024 25224672.8% 22.8%
2025 3763125514.9% 25.0%

In 2025, Finland’s embassy and consulates in Australia (Canberra) received 376 applications for short-stay Schengen visas and issued 312. The refusal rate was 14.9%. The refusal rate rose by 12.1 points from 2.8% in 2024, a sharp increase. Applications rose by 49% compared with 2024 (252).

For comparison, all Schengen states together refused 3.0% of the applications lodged in Australia that year, from 0.6% at the consulates of Switzerland to 8.8% at those of the Netherlands. Finland’s consulates worldwide refused 13.4%. Finland was the 9th most applied-for Schengen state in Australia.

You apply to the Schengen state that is your main destination (the longest stay or the main purpose; the state of first entry only when there is none), so a lower rate elsewhere is no reason to apply there. The figures cover applications lodged in Australia, by any nationality: mostly citizens, but also residents from other countries.
