Austria: visa decisions in Australia

YearApplicationsVisas issuedRefusedRefusal rateMultiple-entry share
2023 3,6383,583551.5% 99.9%
2024 4,6844,603791.7% 88.5%
2025 4,8294,679280.6% 96.7%

In 2025, Austria’s embassy and consulates in Australia (Canberra) received 4,829 applications for short-stay Schengen visas and issued 4,679. The refusal rate was 0.6%. That is barely different from 2024 (1.7%). Applications rose by 3% compared with 2024 (4,684).

For comparison, all Schengen states together refused 3.0% of the applications lodged in Australia that year, from 0.6% at the consulates of Switzerland to 8.8% at those of the Netherlands. Austria’s consulates worldwide refused 11.9%. Austria was the most applied-for Schengen state in Australia.

You apply to the Schengen state that is your main destination (the longest stay or the main purpose; the state of first entry only when there is none), so a lower rate elsewhere is no reason to apply there. The figures cover applications lodged in Australia, by any nationality: mostly citizens, but also residents from other countries.
