How visas for Syria work

Entry to Syria falls under the Ministry of Interior, whose Directorate of Immigration and Passports runs passport and border procedures, including an immigration and passports centre at Damascus International Airport. Since the change of government in December 2024 the ministry has been reorganising these services: it opened a new Immigration and Passports centre in the Yalbugha complex in Damascus in September 2025, reopened the Homs centre in February 2026 and opened a section in Manbij in October 2026. Its announcements appear mainly on its verified official channel rather than on a visa web page.

No Syrian authority currently publishes visa categories, fee tables or application rules for foreigners on an official website we could reach. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates lists only services for Syrian citizens (passports, consular registration, civil status and legalisation), and an e-visa website at evisa.sy shows nothing but a coming-soon notice. This guide therefore sets out only what Syrian official sources confirm and tells you where to ask for the rest: a Syrian embassy or consulate, or the Directorate of Immigration and Passports.

Rules can change at short notice. Read the current travel advice of your own government before planning a trip and confirm entry conditions with a Syrian mission before you book.

Which visa do I need?

Short visit for tourism, family or business: Syria publishes no visa list, so ask a Syrian embassy or consulate which document your nationality needs before you book.

Work, study, long-term residence or family settlement: no official conditions are published online at present; ask a Syrian mission or the Directorate of Immigration and Passports before making plans.

Frequently asked questions

Which nationalities need a visa for Syria?

Syrian official sources that we could reach publish no list of visa-exempt or visa-required nationalities. Ask the Syrian embassy or consulate listed for your country on the foreign ministry's missions page before you travel.

Is there a Syrian e-visa?

A website at evisa.sy carries an e-visa title but shows only a coming-soon notice, and no Syrian authority has announced on its official channels that online applications are open. Apply through a Syrian embassy or consulate instead.

Which Syrian authority decides on entry?

The Ministry of Interior. Its Directorate of Immigration and Passports handles passports and entry and exit procedures, and a separate directorate of the ministry is responsible for security at airports and border crossings. Both took part in the ministry's talks with the Iraqi embassy in July 2026 on entry visas for Iraqi nationals who own property or hold residence in Syria.

Can I get a work, student or residence visa for Syria?

Syrian authorities refer to residence held by foreigners in their announcements, but no official conditions, documents or fees for work, study or residence are currently published online. This guide does not describe them for that reason. Ask a Syrian mission or the Directorate of Immigration and Passports for the current procedure.

Is there an asylum procedure in Syria?

We found no official description of a national asylum procedure for foreigners in Syria. UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, runs a help site for Syria at help.unhcr.org/syria; contact UNHCR directly for questions about refugee registration or protection.
