Who the medical visa is for

Ministerial Order N° 06/01 lists medical treatment among the purposes of the visitor visa, and the DGIE issues sub-class V7 to a foreigner entering Rwanda for medical treatment or a medical consultation confirmed by a recognised medical practitioner. The same visa is issued to the patient’s foreign care attendant.

The visa is single entry, does not allow work and permits a change of status from inside Rwanda.

Supporting evidence

The key document is confirmation of the treatment or consultation from a recognised medical practitioner, typically the Rwandan hospital or clinic that will treat you. Bring a passport valid at least six months, evidence that you can pay for treatment and stay, and a yellow fever certificate if you arrive from an affected country.

A care attendant should carry documents linking them to the patient’s treatment, such as the same medical confirmation naming the attendant.

Fee and validity

The V7 costs USD 30, lower than the ordinary visitor visa, and is valid for 90 days. It is renewable: a patient whose treatment lasts longer applies for renewal at the DGIE before expiry. Fees are not refunded if a visa is refused.

How to apply

The V7 can be requested on Irembo before travel, at a Rwandan mission, at a DGIE office or on arrival at the border. Applying online in advance lets you upload the medical confirmation and arrive with an approval, which is practical for patients who need to move quickly through the airport.

  1. Obtain written confirmation of your treatment or consultation from the Rwandan medical practitioner or facility.
  2. Apply for the V7 on Irembo, at a Rwandan mission or on arrival, together with your care attendant if one travels with you.
  3. Pay USD 30 per visa.
  4. Enter Rwanda and keep the medical documents with your passport.
  5. If treatment continues beyond 90 days, apply to DGIE for renewal before the visa expires.
