How visas for Madagascar work

Madagascar's online visa service is run as an eService for tourism, immigration and emigration and linked to the national police (Polisim-pirenena), which handles border control. All nationalities are eligible for the tourist eVisa, so visitors can apply online before travelling or obtain the same visa at the eVisa counters on arrival; the price is identical in both cases.

The online system covers only the tourist visa. It is a single-entry visa for stays of up to 60 days, and an electronic travel authorisation is issued at the latest 72 hours after the online enrolment is validated. Diplomats and employees of certain organisations are exempt from visa fees and, like missionaries with a mission order, apply on arrival rather than online.

The visa starts on the date of arrival in Madagascar. Travellers who need more time can extend their stay at an immigration office up to a total of 90 days. Settling in the country for work, investment, family reunion, retirement or study requires an immigrant visa obtained before travel, from a Malagasy mission or, where there is none, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, followed by a long-stay visa from the Ministry of the Interior.

Which visa do I need?

Holiday of up to 60 days: tourist eVisa online, or the same visa on arrival.

Holiday longer than 60 days: tourist visa, then an extension at an immigration office up to 90 days.

Diplomats and missionaries with a mission order: apply on arrival.

Settling for work, investment, family, retirement or study: immigrant visa before travel, then a long-stay visa from the Ministry of the Interior.
