Eritrea transit visa: requirements and fee

Transit visa

In short

Travellers passing through Eritrea apply for a transit visa at an Eritrean mission before the trip. In addition to form B62.3, a photo, proof of residence and a passport valid six months beyond the trip, the missions ask for the air ticket itinerary and proof of a visa for the final destination. The fee is USD 30 in Washington, plus printing and service fees, or EUR 30 in Frankfurt.

Who needs a transit visa

Eritrea has no visa on arrival or e-visa for foreign visitors, and everyone without an original Eritrean national ID needs a visa issued in advance. Travellers who only pass through Eritrea on the way to another country use the transit visa listed by the Washington embassy and the Frankfurt consulate general.

Complete and sign form B62.3 online, upload a 35 x 45 mm photo, and provide proof of residence or a permanent resident card for non-US citizens (Washington) or a German residence permit or registration certificate (Frankfurt), a passport valid at least six months beyond the trip, the air ticket itinerary and proof of the visa for your final destination. Travellers from the countries on the yellow fever list present a vaccination certificate on entry.

Process and timing

Choose the transit visa in the mission’s online system, submit form B62.3 with the fee, and mail your original passport. Allow at least 15 business days before your flight, because you can travel only once the visa is in your passport, and plan your route so that you enter within three months of issue.

  1. Obtain the visa for your final destination and your flight itinerary.
  2. Select the transit visa in the Eritrean mission’s online system.
  3. Complete and sign form B62.3 online, upload your photo and pay the fee.
  4. Mail your original passport to the mission at least 15 business days before travel.
  5. Travel through Eritrea within three months of the visa’s issue date.

Validity

All Eritrean visas are valid for three months from the date of issue, so you must arrive within three months. Once you are in Eritrea the visa is typically valid for one month and can be extended or renewed by visiting the Immigration office in Asmara; the New Delhi embassy adds that whether an extension is possible depends on the type of visa.

Which mission to use

Apply to the Eritrean mission responsible for the country where you live: Washington asks non-US citizens for proof of residence or a permanent resident card, Frankfurt asks for a German residence permit or registration certificate, and New Delhi handles residents of India and several neighbouring Asian countries only. Where there is no Eritrean mission in your country, contact the one accredited to it.
