Who applies

The platform lets any foreigner wishing to visit Benin submit an eVisa application. African nationals may visit for 90 days without a visa, and nationals of countries with visa waiver agreements also enter freely. Under Decree No. 2026-049, the tourist or visit visa allows a stay of up to 90 days for family, professional, health or tourist reasons, and both this visa and the transit visa (crossing the country in up to eight days) are issued online.

What the decree requires

Decree No. 2026-049 lists the supporting documents for every visa other than transit: a copy of a passport or travel document valid for more than six months from the date of the application; a ticket guaranteeing departure from Benin for tourist, visit and business visas, unless you enter driving your own vehicle; proof of accommodation, such as a hotel booking, an invitation from a Beninese institution or company, or an accommodation certificate from a Beninese national living in Benin or a resident foreigner; and the receipt for the visa fee.

Applying

Start the application with your email address, passport number and passport expiry date, fill in the trip data, including the planned entry date, and pay. Choose the visa according to the length of your stay. Apply at least seven days before entry and not more than 90 days before. Processing takes from one hour to 96 hours, and the status can be checked with the application number. Because issuance is automated, the eVisa cannot be modified once issued.

  2. Choose the 30-day or 90-day eVisa according to your stay.
  3. Apply on evisa.bj 7 to 90 days before entry.
  4. Check the form carefully, then pay online.

  6. Renew at the DEI before expiry if you stay on.

Validity, renewal and longer stays

The eVisa is valid from the entry date you entered, for the 30 or 90 days you chose. If it expires during your stay, contact the DEI to extend it; the renewal request is filed before the current visa expires, states the reason and comes with the renewal fee receipt. Anyone who stays more than 90 days in total must also obtain a foreigner personal identification certificate (CIPE), and visas for such stays are issued in printed form or as a passport sticker.

Refusals

Any refusal to issue or renew a visa is notified to the applicant. Under Law No. 2025-15 it cannot be appealed, and a person refused a renewal must leave Benin within three days of the notification. A foreigner without a valid title faces a fine of at least twice the cost of the title they should have held.
